What’s been going on?

June 22nd, 2009

You may wonder why the blog hasn’t been updated in a while! We have been so, so, so busy spending months designing our new site which is incredibly dynamic, new design, new logo, new everything. It’s going to be unreal and you are going to love it! It’s still quite top secret, till we let it leash on the public next month.

So, I do personally apologize for not getting more blogs your way. We do have a lovely new feature on the site where you can even write your own blog on the site and tell the country about your city.

I was on BBC Breakfast Radio this morning giving my advice (not to) use paid dating sites to make money. There is a site out there which you can sign up and put your price on how much it is to take you to dinner. Then, seemingly rich city boys will come and take you out. I signed up and nobody wants to take me out! I think it’s mainly for attractive girls but we certainly don’t condone it at Wealthystudent.co.uk - there are fair better ways to get money in your bank account!

Raw Meat 3

April 6th, 2009

Surprise, surprise!!!! Haha, I think that I predicted that Alistair Darling was talking out of his arse when he said there would be either zero growth or positive growth at the beginning of the year. I think Politicians are becoming as far removed from the real world as celebrities. They have to put on this false, fake exterior just to survive.

They live out on the edge of society, ordering ‘Raw Meat 3′ and putting it on the public tax bill. Perfect. I don’t envy them and I respect what they do, especially the PM. Running a country is definitely the hardest job in the world and requires a multitude of skill sets to get the job done properly. We should perhaps give them a bit of a break. Order Raw Meat 3, but not a free second £500,000 flat on the Thames. I think that’s fair.

Spring is freaking here, more fees plus the RPI rate

March 24th, 2009

The good news is that we can now get our shorts and t-shirts on because it has officially reached about 15 degrees, bang! Let’s get down the beach!

But, I’m about to go freaking nuts about more fees to be added to students already substancial top up fees. What the hell are the government doing about this? It seems that is all the universities idea. Middle England is screwed, only the rich, divorced and poor will be able to afford to go to university. For those college students who have parents who have managed to keep their marriage together and are earning an average wage between them - no help for them, abusive fingers up in the air.

I think it was Blair who said he wanted 50% of people to go to university. My prediction is that this percentage will drop to about 25% if these new fees come in. Half the universities will shut down due to lower student numbers and that is no good for anyone.

I don’t agree with people slagging off people doing ‘Media type’ degrees, a lot of clever people do these degrees and do a lot more than people doing a maths or economics degree. Each to their own, many students do not know what they want to do (in terms of a career) when they go to university and may opt for a media type course.

Other good news is the RPI rate is down to 0% - this means interest rates should match it soon on our student loans, it’s currently around 1%.

Sorry for the wait for this post, been a busy boy again! Be back soon. Mwah!

Twitterifficness

February 27th, 2009

The future of the internet is changing every day and twitter is another new thing that will run its course. I’m not sure what use twitter has for the every day normal person who uses Facebook and the like. It’s pretty useful for business networking and ‘following’ people you look up to (Richard Branson etc).

If you’d like to follow me then go to twitter.com/wealthystudent

The mobile online world is going to be big, big news in the next few months and years. We are attempting to lead the way with online mobile voucher redemption via wealthystudent.mobi and location based products are going to be immense. I personally can’t wait to see what the online world brings in the next few years, our whole lives are going to be renewed and improved in this recession. I love change and I love what is happening right now (expect people losing their jobs of course). It’s also a great time to be a student, especially if you’re starting out.

If you’re reading this, still at college and thinking about going to university, I urge you to go. Choose your subject wisely, choose your university wisely and be the best you can be.

We need 100 Van Wilder’s

February 9th, 2009

Just a short post today I’m afraid! It’s to say that we’re looking for 100 Van Wilder’s to help make become super minted at university.

This is seriously your chance to become pretty well off at university.

See here for details about the job

Will blog more soon, busy boy today!

Positivity is KING, KING, KING!

February 2nd, 2009

Is it hypocritical that I get really annoyed by negativity? Does that mean I’m negative if I’m annoyed by a stupid BBC journalist constantly picking negatives? Check this annoying woman out. She can’t see any way that the human race is going to carry on giving through this economic crisis.

As mentioned on my previous blog post, when will journalists wake up and smell that they are actually putting their own jobs at risks by being so negative?  Negative journalists = bad economy = less paper sales = less journalists. When will they realise that people actually would likea positive spin on things?

Anyway, I’m not here to moan. There is plenty to be excited to be out. I may have done it before but here are my reasons for excitement:

  • I think this is a time for emotional enlightenment. With crisis, we’ll being to look inwards to find what really makes us happy. Do we really need to rely on material things, alcohol, cosmetic surgery to be happy? Or can we turn to help our neighbour in a time of need to put a little happiness in our hearts?

  • As humans, we are stimulated by challenges. We will come through this stronger than ever.

  • Crappy businesses will be weeded out and we will have a far more advanced technological society in 10 years time. Online businesses will spearhead this.

  • This is a great time to be a student. Students can now go to university and by the time they leave the worst will be over. It’s time to go and enjoy yourself, learn new skills, do some charity work and develop yourself.

  • This recession doesn’t effect students pockets as much as everyone else. Students still have the same amount of loan in their pocket and prices are generally coming down. Be savvy and you’ll be fine.

Just try and be the best you can be. Now is the time to discover who you are, what you want and where you want to go. What’s really going to make you happy?

President Barack Obama and win Spring Break UK Tickets

January 25th, 2009

Hey guys n girls,

It’s late on a Sunday night and I’ve just got back in from watching Slumdog Millionaire - I recommend it! Anyway, I have been thinking about the new American President for a while and getting other people’s opinion on him.

For me, he represents hope and as long as he gets his priorities right then everything should be fine. I wholeheartedly congratulate him in putting up where all the money his government spends on his website. This is what OUR government should be doing. Instead, we are stuck in the 1990s with G Brown and crew.

Transparency through government is the way forward, transparancy though the banking system is the way forward and clearly stating our countries goals is the way forward. Make it clear to the public what we need to do about climate change.

Rant over.

I really need to start making this blog a little more fun, haha!

On that note, we have a new mobile social network coming in the next week and you can win four tickets to Spring Break in Mallorca here. Now get winning!

What will 2009 bring for the world?

January 9th, 2009

My predictions for 2009:

- The housing market will fall by at least another 15%, possibly 20%. I think the faster it falls the better, the economy is waiting for it to fall so that other individuals can jump onto the ladder and get it moving again. All this requires patience. I also believe it will keep dropping at least another 10% in 2010, in 2011 we’ll see it hold prices. The current housing market just isn’t sustainable. For anyone who is single, they need a salary of £60,000 to get on the housing ladder - plus a deposit of about £20,000. There aren’t too many recent graduates earning this. This puts even more pressure on young people to make relationships work, it’s tough going out there.

- The media will never realise that they are creating a self fulfilling prophecy for the world and the economy. I long for a day when the media wakes up and realises it could do something amazing in the world. Do they realise how much power they have? Yes, I’m sure they do. Do they realise their potential to change all our lives for the better just by releasing more positive news? There should be a ban on negative news, well maybe not - we need to know what’s going on in the world so that we can try and do something about it. I propose that with every negative news story there should be some ‘pro-solution’ news. What can everyone do about it?

- I think Obama might well change the world. He isn’t in the White House just yet so we can’t comment on what he’s done but I have a good feeling about him. I’ll leave it at that.

- Everyone is going to get bored of Facebook in 2009. Nuff said, don’t worry - we have something in the pipeline.

- That businesses need to change their ethical thinking, right from the get go. Let’s face it, the world is a complete mess at the moment. The environment is a MAJOR issue, there is a war in the middle east, deforestation, Africa, the global economy - this is a testing time for planet earth. Businesses, start ups and everyone can help. From this year forward, things HAVE to and WILL change.

- Ricky Gervais, Karl Pilkington and Steve Merchant will continue to make me laugh. On a lighter note, these guys are comical geniuses. Karl, I want to meet you.

That’s it for now, catch up soon. Much love from Steve Burford, MD Wealthystudent.co.uk

Men’s Health Photoshoot

December 17th, 2008

I couldn’t quite believe that I’d won a Men’s Health competition (sponsored by 3) for best internet startup. They called last week and it’s really great news for the business. The scariest thing about winning was the photoshoot!

I had to be up in London fairly early on Friday last week and get my make up on (for the first time ever), which was a little weird. If I’m honest, I’m a little camera shy and my face finds it hard to look great in photographs but I think the lovely guys at the shoot managed to pull it off.

We did the shoot in a Gentlemen’s club in London’s West End, it was in the library section and was pretty classy. I never knew how technical it was to get the light in the right place, a photographers job is not easy! Neither, for that matter, is a models! It is actually quite tiring being photographed all day. Oh, the life.

The full page in the mag is to be on sale on the 2nd February.

Here is my chubby face that you’ll get to see if you buy the mag:

Christmas is coming and why I love the recession

December 6th, 2008

Christmas is back, are you excited?

Many families around the country are not very excited, with the ailing job market, redundancies and limited credit available, Christmas may not be so great.

My advice for all the students out there is try and earn a couple of hundred quid over Christmas. Hunt down the New Year jobs, any bar jobs going, basically anything you can find.

This may astound some people, but I am genuinely excited about this looming recession. I’ll give a few reasons why:

- House prices are coming down which means graduates will be able to buy in 2/3 years time. That’s if you’ve opened a savings account and decided to save.

- Recession will ultimately bring unity the country. It SHOULD bring people closer.

- It causes businesses to think more carefully, all the businesses that don’t offer real VALUE will be weeded out.

- New businesses will start. It is now incredibly cheap to start a business on the Internet. It’s hard to make it work but if you have the willpower, anything is possible.

- I think this recession will cause us all to think outwardly. We not only need to think about our own pockets but need to think about all the other bad things going on the world. The deforestation, environment and child poverty are firmly on my mind. I want to do something about these things.

These are my main reasons for loving this recession. I know there are bad things happening with losses of jobs and I feel for those people but things WILL turn out okay in the end.

Do you agree with me?
