There are obviously a few exceptions. You can’t really buy second hand Christmas or birthday presents! If you are 
buying for yourself then there are second hand places all over the places, Amazon, Blockbuster etc.
Books
Same as the above. You should know this as a student! Try the library, friends and then Amazon for free and second hand deals.
Video Games
Again, you can easily find used video games from online sellers at sites like Amazon and eBay a few months after the release date. You can also check in the likes of HMV, Game and even Blockbuster. It may also be a good idea to rent the game first to see if you like it.
Furniture
Why bother assembling your own when you can pick it up for free or nearly free) on Gumtree and Freecycle? Summer is the best time to hunt for furniture—mainly because other students will be moving back home and getting rid of unwanted stuff!
Jewellery

Cars
I know that not everyone is a used-car type person. Until buying my Mini, I steered clear of used. But at the same time, I understood that I paid a premium for that new car smell. Buying used cars is a great way to save a ton of money in one blow.
