Getting some work experience at uni whether it be paid or voluntary, will pay big time when it comes to going out in the real world!
Here are just a few benefits of a part-time job at uni:
Motivated now?
FACT: Most companies don't advertise their vacancies. You need to approach them!
So what is on offer for me?
What next?
Make sure your CV is ready to go. Write a professional covering letter explaining you would love to work in this particular establishment and that you can start at ANY time and leave some contact details.
If you are looking for somewhere a bit classier than washing up glasses and wiping up people's piss then read the next bit carefully.
First thing you need to do is: Get your CV sorted!
Write down all your skills and previous experience. What jobs have you had before? What have you been strong at? What can you add to a team? Do you work well in a team? Are you a good salesperson? Are you really good at customer service?
If you can prove that you are good at customer service then you are half way to getting a new job. If you have never worked before then get your blagging cap on.
Next, get a decent cover letter to go with your CV. Below is an example.
Dear Sir/Madam, I have just arrived in the ******* area and I am about to embark on a three year course studying Business at ******* University. I am eager to show off my skills and add a great deal of positive things to your business. Your company really appeals to me because of its renowned customer service. You will see on my CV that I have fantastic customer service skills. I am able to commit to 15 to 20 hours per week and can fit this around my studies, including weekends. I know that I can impress you with my attitude and business knowledge when we meet. I am available for interview at anytime. Yours truly, Mr. Smith |
This is the kind of thing you need to send out to as many companies as you can. Travel companies, banks, customer service companies, advertising companies, administration jobs, sales companies, anything you can think of.
Get out there and start marketing yourself!
The next step is to get good at interviews!
