All the hands to the pump

June 10th, 2008

Hey guys n girls! Summer is finally upon us and the sun is shining outside and I am sweating my ass off trying to bring you as many discounts and vouchers as I can before the new academic year starts. I am just putting the finishing touches to the book before it goes off to the publishers at the end of the week. It should be out on Amazon.co.uk by mid August (if all goes well).

The book will be available free on this site in an e-book version via on the email sign up. Perhaps if you’re a new student then you could ask mum or dad nicely to get you a paperback copy!

Remember to keep money close to your chest over summer, it’s a good time to keep some sort of budget going before September comes around. Rising oil prices means don’t put your foot down when driving around and make sure to watch your budget for food - prices are going up!I am off on a long awaited to Kos on Saturday so keep chatting on the forums and give us any feedback on admin@wealthystudent.co.uk - we’d love to hear from you!

Talk soon,

Burf.

PS. I pulled out Holland in the sweepstake - result! I love the Dutch. Did you know the women chat up the men there and their favourite line is - “Would you like to share a biscuit with me in the morning?” It means that they want breakfast with this person and therefore would like to sleep with that person. Genius!

When two become one…

May 10th, 2008

It’s been a while and we have busy behind the scenes at wealthystudent!

With a long discussion and seeing how everything is working we are deciding to scale down everything onto one main site (wealthystudent.co.uk) - we do currently have four sites - the banking, savings and phones site.

The main reason for this is it should be much easier to use and everything will be in one place. There is also going to be change in the way the website is set up. The menu bar is going to be going someplace different and it should look pretty sweet!

We have also made a MAJOR decision to give the book we are writing away for FREE on the website. That’s a free e-book version for everyone. This book is going to change the way students think about money and their University experience. We believe everyone should read it for free.

We are hoping that people take the book seriously and don’t treat it like a free piece of junk. I think we’ll have to play some mysterious trick to make everyone think they paid good money for it but they really got it for free.

The book will be out by the end of August and available on Amazon.

That reminds me…keep entering the competition so that you can get your advice in this book! Not enough entries so far!

Recession? I think so.

April 22nd, 2008

The economy is looking like it’s going to collapse. The government are panicking by putting £50million of our own money into the banking system in an attempt to get a few more people on the housing market and stop the inevitable collapse of house prices.

The prices will crash and this is good for current students as in 4 or 5 years time housing SHOULD be more affordable. A well known economist predicted there would be a housing price crash starting in 2008. He says there is an 18 year cycle. 14 years of stable or growing prices followed by around 4 years of falling prices.

So how will the recession affect students?

Money will be tighter with costs of everyday goods going up, but if you can pick up a part-time job and save a bit of cash whilst you’re at University you’ll be in a great position when you finish.

You’ll need to start being a bit tighter with your cash and not piss it all away drinking to 4am every morning. Be a wealthy student, not a skint student!

I’ll be blogging more soon on this subject, but busy writing this book at the moment!

Competition and My thoughts on the Government

April 7th, 2008

I have a nice title for the book that has come in the competition ‘The Wealthy Student Handbook’ - providing a wealth of knowledge for the student community.

It’s going to be tough to be it - but you can try here.

With this blog I am going to get into some meatier subject matter to get my real views on things out there.

This week: Where does all the money really go?

I am talking about taxes and what the general public pays. Of course we pay taxes to maintain the services - police, army, hospitals and those things, but is every single pound and penny going to good places?

I personally don’t think it is.

There is so much waste of money in our society and our government has to take the blame here. I know if every penny was spent properly students wouldn’t have top up fees and being slammed with 4.8% interest.

We need to fight the student corner but we also need to fight our own corner as a British citizens. Where is every single pound of our money going? All we seem to have found out lately is that MP’s can now claim thousands on a new kitchen for their second home.

In Scotland students don’t have the same fees as us. Why not here?

We need answers and in our quest to help students, we’ll also be trying to get these answers.

Are you with us?

Okay you guys win, we’ll put the prize money up.

April 3rd, 2008

8 entries so far which is good but not quite good enough!

That means you have forced me to bump it up to £100. No more until we get loads more entries!

That’s got to be four nights out the town at least!

There is also a second prize of a ipod shuffle.

Again, we need to have at least 50 entries by the end of April or we’ll have to roll over till May.

So you get your competition entries in.

This is just a short blog post but in the next post which will be in a couple of days about a so called ‘expert’ who wanted me to pull wealthystudent.co.uk down. Hmm…who could it be? Who would do such a petty thing?

Over a years work has gone into this site and it’s here to raise awareness and fight student debt. No one will take it down.

You’ll find out who it was pretty soon.

For now take it easy guys. Look after yourselves this weekend! My arm is finally out of my cast but I can’t move the damn thing. One day I’ll be a normal human being again!

A book is coming and the love of my life Karl Pilkington

March 25th, 2008

Hey guys and girls,

Good news today. I have the go ahead to get a book out there and should be out by September for all the new freshers to soak up.

It’s going to be the ultimate guide to student life, with a fresh approach to how to attack life as a student and get the most out of University life.

This means we have changed the competition yet again and unfortunately cut the prize fund for the moment as I have blown all my money making the site and testing some advertising. With your help we can have a bigger prize fund, you got to donate 47p or join that survey site.

See here for more details on the new competition

All you have to do now is write a few words in the right part of the forum (here) and you may well get your writing published for future generations of students to read. As well as getting some cash and a new CV.

On a side note, I love Karl Pilkington.

Watch this video…

I am sure that Karl did the world renowned podcasts with Ricky and Steve Merchant. It is rumoured that he is not going to do anymore because people think his real name is Graham.

I can’t deal with this.

Life without a new daily dose of Karl is like being shot in the face.I have started a campaign on the forums to bring him back. Please join in!

Press, free stuff and a catch up.

March 18th, 2008

Core blimey it’s tough letting students know about a site without a million pound budget to blow.

If you live in the West Herts area, I will be appearing on Radio Verulam 92.6FM for a small interview about the site and what I’d like to achieve. Should be somewhere between 4pm and 5pm.

I also sent out this press release a few days ago to try and pick up some momentum and introduce new students to the site.

The forums are taking shape nicely and more and more people are joining up on the email (we only send out a couple of times a month with a bit of info and deals).

I feel that if we are going to grow by word of mouth then I need to add loads more content and useful information on making more money, physical health, mental health, more free stuff and much more. What do you think? (Leave a comment below).

On a side note, the economy seems to be in dire streets at the moment. Inflation is causing prices on everyday goods to go through the roof, banks won’t let us borrow anymore which means we are grinding to a halt. So what does this mean for you?

I think for students it doesn’t mean it’s too bad. We can ride out the wave for the next 2 or 3 years and house prices will have come down and the economy stabilised.

We just need to worry about how much we are spending and not getting in more debt than we need to be. Take advantage of student free stuff and the monthly competition where you can win money! (Shameless plug).

Take care of your cash and join our fight against the crippling student debt.

Stick with us.

PS: I may start doing a video blog soon. So exciting!

Competition and these interest rates are still driving me nuts

March 7th, 2008

Well ladies and gents the competition is up, it’s been there for 2 days and I haven’t had one entry yet! What’s going on?

You get a free professional CV (or voucher for when you need it if you win), plus you could win some cash.

Now, if you’re a student - read this and see if you don’t go mad.

I officially think this government is crazy. How can Bill Rammell, the ‘higher education minister’ dare to say…

“There is no real rate of interest. The student only repays, in real terms, what they have borrowed.”

“This is in contrast to the policy of the Conservative party which is that students should pay a real rate of interest.”

What is this conservative ‘real rate of interest’? Maybe it is something more manageable like 2%

Most of us (like me) are going to be graduating with £15,000 debt, so that’s £720 in interest a year which will compound unless I am earning over £22,000.

This is the same for everyone.

Is it fair? NOOOOOO, it’s not fair.

The government are clearly making money off us and it’s about time we did something about it, something more than Facebook petitions.

I have set up a new forum - HERE - it’s the bottom thread - this will discuss what we are going to do about it.

We will get something done.

GET INVOLVED.

It’s Competition Time

March 3rd, 2008

In my vision of WealthyStudent I wanted to clear all student debt, make students happier and richer.

I may have just found a solution but it needs some interaction on your part.

In a few days time we’ll be adding a competition to the site. There will be 2 ways to enter:

  • Write a forum post
  • Film a 1 minute video and post it on youtube with your top student tip

There will be standard prizes of a fully made up CV (courtesy of the CVCentre) and another prize (possibly from lovefilm.com if we can persuade them).

The prizes will be given to the best forum post and most entertaining/useful video.

The thing is…I want to give cash prizes!

The other thing is…I am a student and I’m very poor so can’t give you the £3000 each that I want to!

There are two ways round it:

  • To enter, you sign up with a site and we try and get a 50 pence donation out of them per sign up, or…
  • You donate 47 pence to the prize fund

Or you can be a tight ass and give nothing!

We would put all the donations into the prize fund. This means if we can get a couple of thousand students to enter we would have a decent money pot to give out.

We are going to be testing it in a few days. We’ll need at least 100 students to enter or we’ll roll it over to the next month.

Let’s hope it works.

Watch this space.

Blyk, Student Research & a broken arm.

February 27th, 2008

Hey Studs (short for students),

I hope your arm isn’t as broke as mine is right now.

Please don’t try drinking a bottle of wine in 10 minutes on an empty stomach and then diving like superman into a road on the back streets of Bournemouth.

The docs had to re-align my arm with my wrist. Bad times.

Anyway, back to work…

The sites are almost done now. Just a couple of changes to the menus on the sites, the forum and the blog.

We have also done a lot of surveys and we found that you guys don’t want a weekly email. We are still keeping the email sign up but only to send you interesting things, special deals and free stuff. We won’t send more than 2 emails a month and it’s VERY easy to opt out of the email and stop it coming to your inbox.

The highlight of the free stuff at the moment is the Blyk free SIM card you get when you text ‘STUDENT’ to 82595. It comes with 217 free texts and 43 free minutes. Useful as a spare SIM at the end of the month when you are running low on credit.

Keep checking back for more deals and please tell us what you want from us or what you think by either:

- leaving a msg after this blog post

- going to the forums

- emailing us on admin@wealthystudent.co.uk

Oh, some other cool news…we have some videos coming soon (in a few weeks).

Take care,

Steve Burf x
