What I can't understand is that MPs get at least £62,000 per year BEFORE their £40K "expenses"... Why?! If I was earning £62K then I would pay for everything out of that salary, and not ask for a penny more. In fact I'd probably return some unspent money back to the Treasury, which is what the US candidate Ron Paul does (although he seems to have been squeezed out of the race thanks to Obama and McCain -- argh, damn US election coverage that won't go away in Britain!).

I know that some people think that "good leaders should live well" -- but seriously??? It's stupid, and they should have the honesty to admit that instead of promising to "be more open" whilst still holding on to their overly generous expense accounts. I mean, why can't there be some sort of training programme for MPs, whereby they have to "survive" on the national average salary for a year -- or, dare I say it, the national minimum wage? Then some of them might think twice before treating their constituents, and the citizens they represent, as their "subjects".
