The Real World Awards, Students in London & The BBC
Friday, September 19th, 2008Wow, it’s been a busy couple of weeks. A couple of weeks ago I was invited to the Real World Awards Graduate Entrepreneur of the Year (as I made the shortlist) and it was a great experience networking with other students who are really going for it.
Unfortunately I didn’t win but it was no biggie, I think WS.co.uk was a bit too young to win this year but we have plans to be big. It was just nice to mingle with others and see what they were doing. A student who won an award last year had set up the African’s Prisons Project, he is attempting to change the state of prisons in Africa. He was haunted by the state of them when he visited and felt compelled to do something about it. Eventually, I’d love for this site to support this and many more charity projects. The time will come!
As a result of the networking I was invited to be an ambassador of the Make Your Mark scheme which I was happy to take up. I will enjoy helping and advising other people to achieve their dreams.
Another thing that my eyes were opened to at the awards was the sorry affair of London students! I met a girl called Becky who studies at the LSE and she was telling me the amount of debt most London students get in - £15,000 a year. I trembled at the thought. She came up with some really good ideas for the site and I’ll be most likely implementing some of them (thanks Becky if you’re reading!) She definitely made me determined to do as much as I possibly can for students, watch this space - I will be changing the university experience forever!
PS. I should be on a video on the BBC news website later this week giving a few tips for new students. I was also on BBC Radio last week.
