In our research for this site we went and asked Times Top 100 employers what they were looking for in graduates...

We asked the following questions:

• What things do you look out for in a CV?

• What will help the candidate get an interview?

• How important is work experience?

• How important is the mark in the degree the candidate attains?

• What are the most important attributes when first meeting a
  candidate?

• What are the qualities that make a candidate stand out during the interview process?

• What personality traits are you looking for in a candidate?
  

 

We found there was a little variation in the answers, dependent on which industry the employer was in, but generally they had similar responses.

Here are the important traits that employers are telling us you need to get the job…

A professional, error free and bespoke CV and cover letter Work experience is a BONUS, not essential but would help because there are more graduates with good degrees A willingness to learn and confident in using their own initiative Knowledge and enthusiasm for the job, company and industry A clear idea of a career path A will dressed & polite candidate

Here are some other important facts we found for you...

• Nearly ALL of the employers are looking for a graduate who tailors themselves and their CV to the employer and job they are going for.

• Candidates who want the job must show enthusiasm and knowledge for the job they are applying for. This is more important than the degree attained in many cases.
  

• A covering letter that shows enthusiasm and knowledge for the job can guarantee an interview in some application cases.
  

• At graduate level many company’s look for potential rather than experience. Though relevant work experience will help you get the job.
  

• Work experience is becoming increasingly important with more and more graduates with good standard degrees.
